Power Capacitor Application Feasibility analysis and re-design associated with the relocation of three 400kV Series Capacitor Banks from Nestor to the Natal Network. Re-design, commissioning and harmonic integration analysis of Komatipoort 132kV Shunt Capacitor Bank Compiling series capacitor bank specifications for the Cape 400 kV lines. This included system studies to determine network stability limits and to verify that network phenomenon such as Sub-Synchronous Resonance does not occur. Redesign the potential upgrade of the existing 400kV series capacitor banks on the Cape Transmission network. Study, design, manufacture, commission and maintain a 66 MVAr shunt capacitor bank at the Merensky substation. Study, design, manufacture, commission and maintain a 150 MVAr shunt capacitor bank at the Apollo substation. Perform harmonic integration studies for 9 new shunt capacitor bank to be installed in the Eastern Cape transmission network. Perform shunt capacitor configuration optimisation studies for the 9 new shunt capacitors in the Eastern Cape transmission network, including surge arrestor (MOV) design studies. Redesign shunt capacitor configuration for harmonic integration into the Eastern Cape transmission network.
Industrial Power Supplies Specification and performance verification of 1.2 MVA UPS for application at the Apollo HVDC terminal. Due to the sensitive nature of the essentially drive systems at the terminal, the UPS backup system were developed to eliminate any voltage depressions such that the load would not be affected. Apart from dip proofing, the UPS’s also provided redundancy through the design characteristics.

Static VAr Compensators Perform measurements to verify the requirement for the Potgietersrus and Tweekoppies Static VAr compensators, including harmonic integration, voltage unbalance and voltage support requirements. Develop PSCAD/EMTDS simulation models for the SVC’s. Perform integration studies for possible relocation of the SVC’s to alternative substations. Recommission the Potgietersrus Static VAr Compensator.
Network Expansion and Strengthening Evaluate network expansion and strengthening plan for the Eastern Cape related to the developments at the Coega Industrial Development Zone. Perform optimisation studies to determine the rating and configuration of the series capacitors required for the expansion. Perform Transient Recovery Voltage and Rate of Rise of Recovery Voltage studies for the line breakers on which the new series capacitors will be installed. Verify the Western Cape network strengthening proposal with respect to Steady State and Dynamic network behaviour.
