Motraco Transmission Company Energisation studies and procedures for the new 400kV transmission lines Mozal transformers energisation studies General Consultation to the Motraco Maintenance and Operating Committee Electricidade de Mozambique Quality of Supply impact study
The expansion of loads in the Southern Mozambique necessitated the strengthening of the Motraco network in order to wheel power from the Eskom network to the Maputo substation, from where the loads may be supplied. The total new load in the network will amount to almost 2000MW within the next 10 years. Transmission Grid Consulting investigated various methods and technologies of strengthening the existing network, phased over 10 years, in order to provide the new loads with power. The options proposed includes building a third transmission line on 400kV, the installation of a Static VAr compensator, Series Capacitor banks and Shunt Capacitor banks. The quality of the supply with respect to voltage harmonics, voltage depressions, voltage unbalance and flicker were evaluated and mitigation techniques were proposed in order to ensure a good quality of supply, in spite of the size and nature of the proposed industrial loads. Transmission Grid Consulting further provided cost estimates and timetables for the phasing of the project.
Development of a Joint Power Controller for the Motraco transmission system to enable the transfer of non-firm power to Maputo substation.
Transmission Grid Consulting and Trans-Africa Projects, in a partnership, was recently awarded a contract by Motraco to perform all consulting services with respect to the transmission network expansion and strengthening project in Mozambique. The services will include all engineering required to develop technical specifications for the power equipment required for the network expansion. The power equipment will include:
Two 72MVAr shunt capacitor tuned to the 5th harmonic frequency Two 150MVAr damped shunt capacitors tuned to the 3rd harmonic frequency Two series capacitor banks to be installed on the two 400kV transmission lines One 500MVA 400/132kV power transformer. A 132kV transmission line between Maputo substation and Mozal plant All relevant secondary equipment
The services also includes tender evaluation, adjudication, award, project management, Factory acceptance testing, Site acceptance testing, Commissioning tests and performance verification tests on all the relevant equipment.
